When we started putting together the collection Artfinder uses, we were struck by how much great art we’d never seen before was being loaded up. Fantastic stuff that was either out of fashion, or obscure or simply not created by one of the “Rock Star” artists that pack out the big name galleries. It became clear that being able to discover this work would be great fun, and maybe expand people’s horizons from “I know what I like” a little.
To try and open this breadth up, without overloading you with navigation options, we try and get out of the way of the art. We want to show the picture you’re looking at as cleanly as possible, accompanied by a handful of possible pictures to look at next. You can click through on any work to get to a more minimal “lightbox” too.
This is also why we introduced the Art Shuffle button into the navigation. Hit it, and it’ll take you a new image. Again, new image. In the “lightbox” mode you can also hit the Artplayer button and sit back completely. We’re beginning with over 250,000 artworks, with more to come.
