First up: two exclusive Limited Edition Prints by the celebrated children’s illustrator Quentin Blake, sold in conjunction with London’s Foundling Museum at £250 each. Best known for his beautiful illustrations of the Roald Dahl children’s books, these prints form part of the Quentin Blake: As Large As Life exhibition hosted at the Foundling (ends 15 April 2012), which presents recent works that Blake created for four hospitals in the UK and France. The subjects of his illustrations reflect the artist’s continuing contribution to hospitals and child welfare.
From the series ‘Mothers and Babies Underwater‘ (2011, above). Quentin Blake explains: “The wonderful thing about the Angers pictures was that they move on to a kind of celebration … The exchange of look between the mother and the child is one of the important things … Of course it is a celebration, but that fundamental relationship, when that comes into the Foundling Museum with the history of foundlings I suppose it takes on yet another dimension.”
From the series ‘Ordinary Life in Vincent Square‘ (2010, above). Quentin Blake explains: ”This is the one set of pictures that is different; all the others are a kind of metaphor. In Planet Zog you are on an alien planet; being on an alien planet is like being in that alien situation in hospital, so as an illustrator you play that. These people, I thought, didn۪t need that. What they wanted was something slightly scruffy, slightly ordinary … relaxing, in a sense, in ordinary human situations.”
